Synopsis:

I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot. The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time. -Jack London

…Looking at a bulletin board mounted at the entrance of the Actors Studio, a young filmmaker finds several postings; some announce members that have recently passed away, and some list new members of the acclaimed institution. Not knowing who these people are, Marc Solomon is compelled to uncover the faces behind the names and tell their stories…

A BRILLIANT BLAZE honors the plight and achievements of a forgotten crowd who play full out to the very end, regardless of fame. This community of active elderly artists stubbornly perseveres for decades in a career where most give up. As they reveal what makes them tick and what propels them forward, we discover a common indomitable spirit, a savvy for survival, and an undeniable passion for the theater.

Sitting in the courtyard of the Actors Studio, Frank Biancamano, at seventy-eight years old, is proud to have recently become a lifetime member. Brooklyn-raised during the depression, he celebrates himself as an outsider who has joined the ranks of elitists. Frank is now on the inside of the institution he could only see from afar a short time ago. Another member, Jacqueline Bertrand, takes us through a home covered with photographs that mirror both her career and love life. She is committed to her passion for acting, even while she mourns her husband’s recent passing. Jacqueline’s life marks a masterful balance between her personal and professional world; in the wake of her husband’s death, Jacqueline must surmount her most daunting challenge.

With filmmaker Marc Solomon, these and other actors’ lives’ unfold in a documentary that will move you to laughter and tears. While their accomplishments and struggles are acknowledged before the camera, we are inspired to use our time, rather than wasting our days trying to prolong them.
